Bessarion Subway Station

The Bessarion Subway Station is on the Sheppard Line of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It was opened to the public in 2002 as part of the first phase. I couldn’t believe that this was considered a viable station since when you come outside there is pretty much nothing to see! I grew up minutes away from Bessarion / Sheppard Streets and stayed in this area for a the first 10 years of my life. I was amazed to see that most of the intersection of Bessarion and Sheppard was pretty much the same. The old Canadian Tire warehouse site was torn down and since 1998 remains in rubble as you can see after all of these years.
So what was the big deal with having built this station here at Bessarion? I mean it really doesn’t look like its even being used ;) Especially since the Leslie Street Station was just minutes away? It's actually kind of creepy being in there (anyone ever see The Shining?)
So I did some research and found out the reason they built Bessarion was part of a plan that has been in the pre-development stages since 1998! It turns out that as of 2007, a development into a large multi-condo complex called the Concord Park Place is in the works. A company in Vancouver called Concord Adex Investments bought the project, this complex will also include a community park as well. So I guess that makes sense? But for now, it looks like a major loss, well at least until the condos and townhomes get built. Guess by then though they'll have to get rid of the ghosts at Bessarion Station first ;)
