Forest Therapy Trail (part of the Rouge Valley Trail system)

Canadian winters are notoriously long, and if you want to survive the chilly months without going completely stir-crazy, you have to find outdoor activities that you enjoy no matter what the weather throws at you!

Recently, my husband and I decided to head out for a long walk. It was one of those classic late-fall, pre-winter days: cold, miserable, overcast, and grey. There was no snow on the ground yet, but the very last of the autumn leaves were hanging on for dear life. Bright pops of amber and red stood out against the bare branches, and we wanted to catch that final burst of seasonal color before it disappeared entirely.

Our destination was the Forest Therapy Trail, a quiet little stretch nestled within the larger Rouge Valley Trail system in Markham. It sits along the winding Rouge River, serving as a peaceful getaway right on the edge of the city.

Many people visit this trail system hoping to spot local wildlife. It’s well-known among local birdwatchers for sightings of songbirds, chickadees, blue jays, and even white-tailed deer stepping through the trees.

Today, however, we didn't spot a single deer or rare bird nor did we see another soul for the entire two hours we were out here! It felt like having the whole forest entirely to ourselves.

If you’re thinking about checking out the Forest Therapy Trail yourself, here are a few practical tips to keep in mind:

  • Free Parking: Accessing this section of the Rouge system is pretty straightforward.  There is street parking near the community access points (like Tuclor Lane) or nearby trailhead car lots along the Rouge Valley Trail system are free of charge.

  • Year-Round Activities: Besides the winter strolls, the broader connected trail network is great for cycling, summer trail running, and photography when the weather warms up. The wide, well-maintained paths and wooden bridges crossing the river make it just as inviting in July as it is in November.

While the grey sky kept the crowds away this time, the peaceful atmosphere left a lasting impression. I’m already looking forward to coming back during the summer to experience these canopy-covered paths under the warm sun.

Over to you: Have you ever explored the Forest Therapy Trail or the Rouge Valley system? How do you like to stay active outside during the cold Canadian off-season? Let me know in the comments below!
