the low-down on what's cooking - a la carte in the Toronto area
Rasta Pasta
During the weekend of 'Doors Open' in Toronto, we decided to check out RASTA PASTA before we explored the 'Spadina House' on Spadina Road.
RastaPasta aside from having a very catchy name, was a very small walk in and take-out only little hub serving fresh, fall off the bone Jamaican fare. I could tell by the colour of the Jerk chicken, it was done proper. Dark chocolate-coloured coating and seasoned to perfection.
I should have asked for the sauce for the rice / peas - will it do next time.
Great value for the price!
If you're a jerk chicken lover other Jamaican dishes, I recommend this little place int he heart of Kensington Market in Chinatown.

Frans Restaurant
We had come to Frans after work on a lovely Friday afternoon. Frans had some distant feel good memory for me as a young girl as my new Aunt (by my Uncle's second marriage) from Quebec just loved hanging out there. She was one of those aunts that made 12 year old girls feel like they were in with the big people - she was cool and beautiful and fun. All the things my own mother was not. Well my mother was sort of fun, but only as far as mother's go.Nicole (my Aunt's name) would take me along and as I gobbled up plates of french toast with syrup and coke at the late hours on the weekends, she would sit relaxed with her 3rd cup of coffee and ongoing chatter with my uncle and her two new girl friends from Toronto.Frans today looks much different. For one thing I must admit, it's cleaner and more sleek/fresh design made the memories of this place feel not the same, but really not stays the same but change. My husband and I enjoyed a half chicken with veggies, and I had the chicken sandwich with fries.I wanted to come here as well to add another piece to my 'cheap eats' but honestly this place was so far from 'cheap' we skipped on the famous Fran's Apple Pie!
This is a quaint family restaurant that serves the usual North American fare. Pleasant surroundings.
Not at all memorable unfortunately though or maybe I am just getting old :)
Cost was $42.99 for 2 meals

The Pizza House
I've wanted to check out this place for years, passed it hundreds of times, but not on my radar because it wasn't an All You Can Eat (check out my blog here : https://aycetoronto.blogspot.com/)
Wanting to try way too many spots now without over-stuffing myself - this was my first hit.
Pizza House - located 920 Danforth / Jones has been here almost 60 years and they're not shy to talk about that either! Family business with a great little old style pizzeria feel. We ordered the "Montreal-style Pizza' which is what I read according to the google reviews!
Didn't quite catch it, but it was passable enough. Three meats (not smoked), bacon, sausage and ground beef, I asked them to put the cheese on top, but the topping just slid off the bottom.
Failed the Montreal style pizza taste
Cost was $35.99 for a large pizza

Dundas Pizza
Dundas Pizza located 3088 Dundas West was a surprise! A nice one too. We biked over after work and ordered the "Montreal-style Pizza' still hopeful to find it in Toronto, without needing to go to Montreal.
The owner has been there for 28 years and is a very cheerful Laotian man, with an adorable, accomodating personality.
his toppings were all fresh, well made and very generous. It was totally amazing, not quite Montreal, but we were pretty happy.
For a large pizza it range in at:
Cost was $ 29.99

Rudy's Burgers
This was totally my husbands fault! He said he 'heard that Rudy's Burgers' were amazing...but it took us almost 40 minutes to meet up after work and it was only at that point that he thought maybe we were in the wrong place.
Rudy's Burgers was not a cheap-eats by no means. We order a couple of burgers and an order of fries. The burgers had been flattened so much that the edges with thin and ridgy - I've actually never seen that before! I guess they are riding on the philosophy "a little goes a long way'
Cost for Rudy's burgers and fries $32.00
Rating 5.5
